The database, published by Elsevier and Stanford University, systematically ranks all the most-cited scientists in every scientific field to a sufficient ranking depth considering Scopus data. Ranking of scientists is done based on a composite indicator, considering six citation metrics (total citations, Hirsch h-index, coauthorship-adjusted Schreiber hm-index, the number of citations to papers as a single author, the number of citations to papers as single or first author, and the number of citations to papers as single, first, or last author). Scientists are classified into 22 scientific fields and 176 subfields. Field- and subfield-specific percentiles are also provided for all scientists who have published at least 5 papers. Career-long data are updated to the end of 2022. The selection is based on the top 100,000 by c-score (with and without self-citations) or a percentile rank of 2% or above.
