It is the first time the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń has been listed in the prestigious Academic Ranking of World Universities - ARWU, the oldest global ranking of higher education schools, called the Shanghai ranking.
The NCU is ranked in the fourth hundred of the 2017 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (in the range 301-400) in the field of life sciences in the research area: Mathematics. Together with NCU there are only seven Polish universities in the list of the 500 best research centres in the world: the University of Warsaw (in the range 101-150); Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań in the 201-300 range, Jagiellonian University and Wroclaw University; and AGH University of Science and Technology in the range of 301-400, and Wrocław University of Technology in the range 401-500.
The ranking takes into account the publication activity of researchers in the field, in particular.
The Academic Ranking of World Universities is one of the three most highly valued and widely commented rankings of higher education schools in the world (alongside the QS World University Rankings and Times Higher Education World University Rankings). It is prepared by the Institute of Higher Education at Jiao Tong University in Shanghai (hence, often referred to as the Shanghai ranking). The report is based upon the academic and research achievements of higher education schools. The creators of the AWRU ranking take into account, among others: international scientific achievements, the number of alumni and employees who have been awarded the Nobel Prize or the Fields Medal, the number of most cited researchers, the number of publications in the prestigious journals, such as "Nature" and "Science", and the number of publications listed in the selected citation index (Science Citation Index - Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index), etc. More about the methodology.
